10 City Tours in Tirana That You Shouldn't Miss

March 31, 2022 Carley Gatson

Tirana, the Republic of Albania's largest city, is blessed with a mild Mediterranean climate, a plethora of beautiful churches and lush parks. Founded in 1614, some striking Mussolini-era architecture dots the city center. Walk between sights such as Skanderbeg Square's 1789 Et'hem Bey Mosque, the 1830 Sahat-Kulla (Clock Tower) and the Puppet Theater, once home to King Zog's puppet parliament. Visit the Peace Bell, built with old cartridge shells, a reminder of Tirana's stormy past.

Founded in 17-nth century, Tirana became capital of Albania only on 1920. Its history stretches from ottoman period to communism area with an influence of modern architecture. During our walking tour in the main boulevard we will visit beautiful sights such as: Clock Tower, Et’hem Bey Mosque, Different Ministries buildings, City Hall, Pyramid of Tirana, President office, University of Tirana, Orthodox cathedral, Catholic cathedral, etc. Next we will enter to the ex-communist BLLOK area which nowadays is transferred into an area full of modern bars and restaurants. A delicious albanian coffee is included on a cozy coffee shop. After this walking we will transfer by car to the highlight of this tour, Bunkart 1. It is a cold war massive underground bunker located in the outskirts of Tirana. With 3000 sq meters underground space, it is an incredible museum showing the history of communism area in Albania. Inside we will spend around 1 hour.

First of all, I thoroughly researched all of the touring options before settling on this tour so, of course, I'm happy with the tour that we made and the price that we paid. Moreover, our charming, informative, patient guide, Taulant, was a perfect attentive host. I mentioned that my daughter collected magnets and he spotted an unique magnet for her, featuring a goat posing on a bunker. The tour ran longer than planned because I was travelling with three elderly slow-moving friends but Taulant was not at all perturbed by the delayed return to Tirana. As long as we got back to Tirana in time to watch that night's televised Albania-France soccer match, he (and my husband) was happy.

We have visited 3 Balkan countries, and Ohrid was one of the highlights of our trip. Its much more prettier than on the photos, and wster is perfectly clear. Tour did meet our expectations, and to daul away without the guide it would be pretty but much less interesting. Our guide bob was easy going polite and interesting and he made our day. Hope to come back here with my family and stay longer, and for sure i will contact Balkan experience again.. They are very professional.

Tirana was such an incredible and inspiring stop on my journey, but it wouldn’t have been so without the guidance of this magical human. Ilir. I spent several days with Ilir on various adventures. His knowledge is beyond, both in the rich history of the region but in matters of life as well. He is so special and I’m happy to call him a friend after this chance encounter. This is not just a 5 star rating, it’s a 10. Go and visit Tirana, but see all the other beautiful offerings of this beautiful country.

Both countries are magnificent, the capital cities of Skopje and Prishtina are large and getting about on foot can be tiring.Ohrid in Macedonia is a gem however be aware in Macedonia your hotel ,accommodation are required to register you with the police.Make sure you get a copy of this registration as they ask for it at Macedonian border .We were also delayed by officers who were not familiar with foreign passports .I would say the people in Kosovo are friendlier, more helpful and accommodating. In Macedonia cakes to die for.Skopje is a delight with statues, architecture and open parks.
