Old Congress Pioneer Cemetary

Reviewed By viettibarb - Thermopolis, United States

This is an amazing pioneer cemetery. We went there because my husband's uncle is buried there, and we found his grave and headstone. And, we were so saddened to see all the small graves of children. We were able to locate this cemetery using google maps. Missed it the first time when we went to the more recent cemetery. But we just continued down the dirt road and found the well-marked Pioneer Cemetery.

Boothilll Graveyard

Boothill Graveyard was the Tombstone City Cemetery from 1878 to 1884. It was not called Boothill until the 1920s. Its occupants ran the spectrum of all the cultures and nationalities of early Tombstone. Cowboys who "died with their boots on" lie next to housewives, business men and women, miners, gamblers, ladies of the "red-light district" and all the famous and not so famous occupants that contributed to Tombstone's early history. By the 1920s, Boothill had fallen into ruin with many grave markers lost or unreadable. A group of citizens in Tombstone and Cochise County began the task of researching old burial records, consulting with relatives, older residents, and using all means available to identify the occupants and mark the graves properly. The task took several years and the efforts of many to accomplish. This resulted in the graveyard being restored much as it was in the early years when it was the city cemetery.

We really enjoyed wandering through the graves and reading the markers. Wikipedia said that Lester Moore never existed but the very nice, friendly woman who sold us the tickets assured us that he was real and that a relative had visited last year. Interesting either way. We enjoyed it so much that we did end up spending more time than anticipated although it’s something you can spend as much or as little time as you want. Do take time to go down to see the Jewish memorial as well. I’m very glad we visited!

Hunt's Tomb

Reviewed By ebcnaz - Seattle, United States

Hunt's Tomb is a tomb in the shape of a small white pyramid behind a fence at the top of a hill within Papago Park. George W.P. Hunt (Arizona's first governor) had the tomb built in 1931 to entomb his wife. He was placed there after his death in 1934. The tomb was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2008. The tomb is easily seen from anywhere in the South West part of Papago Park on a sizable hill overlooking the Phoenix zoo and offers a panoramic view of the eastern part of the Valley of the Sun. "Dubbed "King George VII," he was a friend of the common man and a foe (sometimes) of the railroad and mining trusts, which he called "coyotes" and "skunks." Plaques on his pyramid declare that he was a descendant of an unnamed "Revolutionary War patriot," that he allowed women to vote in his state eight years before the rest of the country, and that he was elected governor seven times, which "set a national record.
