Gorilla Highlands

Gorilla Highlands Tours is part of the Gorilla Highlands Initiative, started in 2011 by a Lake Bunyonyi-based social enterprise Edirisa. The name “Gorilla Highlands” comes from the unique selling point of the region shared by Rwanda, Uganda and DR Congo, however, we go far beyond primates. We wish to open this fascinating transboundary area to responsible tourists, domestic and international. We want respectful travel to benefit local communities as much as possible while conserving the natural and cultural environment.

Lake Mutanda

The volcanic mountains that ring this deep green lake are home to rare mountain gorillas.

Having seen the lake from far off while birdwatching in nearby Mgahinga N.P I was interested in the place as a birding spot. Unfortunately I could only manage a short drive by visit , a bit late in the day for the best birdwatching. However, the moment I stepped out of the car at the waterside eco-resort two Otters popped their heads out of the water right in front of the terrace/pier. An African Marsh Harrier flew over and various Kingfishers and reed/papyrus inhabiting warblers and weaver birds abounded. Lovely spot and probably worth staying the night to catch the late evening/early morning activity, perhaps a boat ride would be fun too. Would love to visit again.
