Kourou Space Centre (Guiana Space Centre)

More than 500 launches have left from this vital space center, begun in the 1960s. Guided tours of the facility and its six launch sites are among the region's most popular attractions.

Well worth the effort. We visited as part of a group and one of our tour members was not on the list so couldn't participate so make sure you just don't rock up and expect to get on a tour. We were lucky enough to within two weeks of a launch so we got to see a rocket moving in to position. Such an interesting place and well worth the effort. Highly recommend.

Reviewed By LFCKOPITE4EVER - Singapore, Singapore

A zoo comprises animals from all corners distant whereas a sanctuary sits in nature local to an area with species from the area only. This only comprises fauna and flora from the Amazon area, is located in the jungle proper and well laid out in a long rectangular 3-4 hour slow walk. Excellent in so many ways that I could have spent far longer there but leave with enough new knowledge of the only found here animals to appreciate the bio-diversity of the North Amazon and region. A terrific must see and well worth the 12 euro!

Devil's Island

Reviewed By doublespresso - Brisbane, Australia

Devils Island in French Guiana is an island which is both famous and infamous. Prisoners were sent from mainland France to serve their time here with the most famous being Napoleon. The film Papillon was based on the escape of a prisoner from the island but there is some doubt as to the historical accuracy of the film. The adjacent island is the one where all tourists land from their cruise liners coming ashore by ship's tender. There is plenty of local wildlife to see including monkeys and a small rodent like animal. The walk around the island is essential as you pass abandoned buildings from a past era and possibly see local fishermen risking life and limb by climbing down the rocky shoreline to cast their lines into the fast flowing seaway.

Camp De La Transportation

Reviewed By Hermes_NL - Amsterdam, The Netherlands

The Transportation Camp was opened in 1858 to receive convicts from France who were shipped to the colonies to do forced labour. The most dangerous ones would go to Devil's island offshore Guyana and the other ones to work. The actual city of Saint Laurent was initiated later, around 1880. The Camp closed in 1946 or some say 1954, but has been well preserved since then. You can visit it by yourself or with your tour guide. One of the Baracks has been repurposed to become the Saint Laurent public library.
