Being a very revered Shaktipeeth, money plays its part here. The approach lane to the temple is lined with shops run by the priests of the temple who sell all the items needed for puja. Also, apart from the general queue, there is a VIP queue, they charge Rs. 500 each (you must bargain) which gets your to the sanctum sanctorum a lot quicker. Photography of the idol is prohibited but if you request your priest in advance, he will get you few extra minutes to click.

In the lap of nature, it is unique in its nature. The frescoes on the walls of various departments in the Ashram area are worth visiting. The glass temple, the chhatimtala, the amra kunja, the bakul bithi and the kala bhavan Sangit bhavan area have an old world charm where the inmates lived in perfect harmony with nature, self, and the artistic surrounding.

Khoai Mela

Reviewed By stantp1916 - Farakka, India

This is my personal favourite in shantiniketan. The open air market commences every Saturday evening in the forests of sonajhuri trees. The place is charming, and together with folk dance performance and the handmade art and crafts sold by the local santhal tribes add to the vibe of this place. But again, we went in the wrong time of the year, poush mela season, when I could barely find any space to park my car. There was too much crowd with some families playing loud songs in their picnic and destroying the ecosystem of the place. However, I don’t want to underrate this place as I have witnessed it’s serenity during normal days.

The Kankalitala Temple

The place is one of the most sacred places I have visited in India. But another reason to remember it is Babu Chatterjee. We visited during winter so my mother had a coat on her. Before entering the temple we left the shoes and coat at his stall. When we came out and boarded the toto to return in half way we realized we forgot the coat. We thought of returning back to the stall. Suddenly we saw a bike approaching calling out for us, it was Babu Chatterjee Stall number 10 he came all the way on his bike searching for us to return the coat. It felt so wonderful that such honest people still exist.
