We caught the boat after tramping the Matemateonga track, which took us up to the bridge, per whanganui river adventures. This was well worth it, with such beautiful scenery. Ken gave us excellent history about the place, and a cup of tea as well! Go on a sunny day if possible, dress warmly for the boat, and wear good walking shoes.

Definitely a must-see when you visit New Plymouth. We didn’t do the whole 11km walkway, but did parts of it, so drove to the Te Rewa Rewa Bridge. It is a stunning piece of architecture- best visited on a fine day when you can take amazing photos. Lake Rotomanu was pretty too.

If you're in the Waitomo area, this is a 35 minute drive from Waitomo village, and 5 minutes from the spectacular Marakopa waterfall. Coming from the village, parking is on the right hand side of the road; be careful turning in as it's on a curve and there might be traffic to cross. Easy walk through a gorge to the main attraction; crosses a bridge where you'll have to hold onto your kids' hands (lest they fall over the edge) and you're under the limestone arch in about 5-10 minutes. It's 57ft of wow, and hard to capture on camera. If you carry on through, you'll climb a couple of stiles, go through farmland (watch the cow pats) and up and around. Loop takes maybe 20 minutes, tops.

A must do if you are doing the Waikato river trail, stunning view of the flowing river and the power generator house. Makes it worth the ride across the bridge!

The drive to the gorge and swing bridge seem to take ages but in reality it was just "up the road'. It was so worth a visit, the river was icy cold to swim in on a hot day and the swing bridge was so much fun once we got over being scared to start out on it. This is a place you need to go on a warm day with hours to spend and a picnic on board.

Awesome sight to behold traveling along national park highway.Built in 1905 it is 3rd tallest viaduct in NZ on main trunk rail line. It is outstanding due to not only its height but paint colour. Picnic table with view to take in site. Good place to pullover for rest and photo shoot.

a lovely way to finish our far north trip - an ice cream and walk along this footbridge and a lovely reminder of times gone by - imagine our teachers now ferrying the children across the water to get to school - the paperwork and OSH headaches - bit like number 8 wire - the resiliency of our times past are a credit ..... so glad we visited - beautiful walk, will explore this area some more another time -
