10 Breweries in Asheville That You Shouldn't Miss

September 24, 2021 Merry Kessler

If you’re into eating locally and supporting sustainable agriculture, go to Asheville—and eat, eat, eat. This town of less than 100,000 people has 17 farmers’ markets, and the local restaurant scene is all about taking advantage of the seasonal produce sold there. And don’t miss the area’s microbreweries.

Wedge at Foundation

The Wedge at Foundation is located a mile upstream from Wedge Studios. This historic building was constructed by Hans Rees & Sons in 1898 to house what would become the largest leather tannery in the country. Today the Foundation buildings are very much a part of the River Arts community. The Wedge Brewery added its second brewery/tasting room in 2017 to expand with the River Arts neighborhood.

Wedge Brewing Company’s second location is a cool place to set up an second brewery. Wedge has some great tasting beers in a laid back location. It was my fist visit and I would be happy to return.

12 Bones Brewing

What goes better with great BBQ than amazing beer? Iconic local BBQ institution 12 Bones expanded in 2019 with their own brewery and taproom. Now you can visit the taproom and taste a variety of house-brewed beers to go with great Q.

We’ve been coming to Asheville for years, and 12 Bones in Arden has become a one of our favorite places in the area. This past year, it’s been one of a handful of places we’ve actually felt safe visiting during the pandemic, they take it very seriously. Their food and brews are top notch (my favorite is the smoked turkey sandwich with a Pineapple IPA). The staff are always awesome, and seem to remember us (and even what beers we like) even though we only make it there every couple of months. They’re also very dog friendly, which is awesome.

Cursus Keme

We had two families with teens meet up at Cursus Keme while we were visiting Asheville. It was a little hard to find but totally worth it! The variety of beer was impressive and the quality was outstanding. The interior is amazing-the use of plants and natural decor to transform a metal warehouse building was highly effective. Beer lovers should definitely stop in and admire the tap, speak to the highly knowledgeable bartenders, and enjoy really good beer. Our teens enjoyed the vibe and we played card games to keep them busy but there was no food so I would bring some snacks for them next time.

Loved our visit to DSSOLVR, the beer is amazing, the music is good, and like most places in town, dogs are always welcome! The only "gripe" i would offer up is that they don't offer flights, but the beer and environment are all spot on. Great place to visit!

I like this place, graffiti all over the area buildings but it fits. The area is going through a rebirth of sorts. We watched an artist do his thing on the building side door and leave (yes it's not approved, yes some of the art is fantastic!!!!) and I'm a old guy who doesn't like it but it fits here. Service friendly, building was off the path, plenty of seating in and out, local type with a food truck outside too. Can't say why but I like it, I felt at home. BTW the beer is good too!

If you are in Asheville and looking for a great place for beer, this should be your first spot. You need to take the short walk outside of “downtown / historic” Asheville. It’s worth the walk, and you will get a better sense of what Asheville is like. Once you find this place, you’ll be rewarded with exceptional beers and great service. Highly recommend.

Catawba Brewery

Catawba Brewing Company is one of Western North Carolina's oldest breweries. Brewed and packaged in Morganton, NC; this February of 2014 we opened our first Asheville tasting room. With up to 14 Catawba craft beers on tap, Catawba has the charm of a small warehouse tasting room, but with the smooth touches of a more established brewery. Our tasting room has two roll-up garage doors that open in good weather, and a large number of tables and bar seats for beer lovers. Dog and kid friendly. We feature the small batches brewed on our 7bbl system on Asheville's south slope location. Stop in and visit us soon. Cheers!

We were walking around the south slope area making our own tour of the breweries. I don’t really like beer so sometimes it can be a challenge to find something I like. They had an awesome peach bellini seltzer on tap!! I liked they had big garage type doors open so you could sit inside and still feel safe with the fresh air.

Slightly off the beaten path (down an alley and then down a few flights of stairs) is this cool brewery with a speak easy vibe. Rotating beers with something for every palette, and has some great music as well. Bar staff even will recommend other breweries to you as well based on the beers you like, can't beat it.
