Great Southern Rail Trail

The Great Southern Rail Trail extends from Leongatha to Toora (75km). The mostly flat or gently undulating trail goes through lush dairy farmland, areas of remnant bush and lowland scrub. It climbs from the foothills of Fish Creek up past Mount Hoddle and then down a steep descent through dense forest out into magnificent views of Wilsons Promontory and Corner Inlet.

This is a lovely section of the trail. Easy riding or walking with great parking at either village. Food and drink available as well as toilets. Parks to sit and relax at both villages. There was new road works going on to take out the Black spur section of road, but with stop go in place on the trail l was not severely inconvenienced.

Great Southern Rail Trail

The Great Southern Rail Trail is a cycling and walking trail between Leongatha and Welshpool. The trail travels straight though the historic town of Toora and this is a great spot to base yourself to explore the trail. The views over farmland and Wilsons Promontory National Park are spectacular.

We rode the entire GSRT over 3 days, utilising the V-line buses to get back to our car each day, but be beware, no bikes are allowed on the buses. This necessitated a shuttle between the car and the bikes. The compacted gravel surface was easy to ride on and well maintained. We rode hybrid bikes, I think road bikes would not be very suitable. There are stretches of the trail that are quite long and straight, however, the gradient is very gentle, not surprising being an old railway line. We also made sure we used the prevailing winds to our advantage when choosing which direction to ride each day. The trail passes through rural areas and country towns - just far enough apart to stop for a coffee breaks if needed. There are stunning views over Wilson's Promontory between Fish Creek and Foster. A few km out of Fish Creek, about 1km? after the trail goes under a road on the way to Foster, keep an eye out for the 2nd (short- 20m) track that goes to an unofficial lookout over Wilson's Promontory - absolutely amazing views! (Don't take the 1st track - it goes up hill for a long way!) Be aware there are not many bicycle repair shops along the trail. We had to drive to Korumburra to find a replacement tire. (The Bicycle Fitting Store - very helpful!) Glenn's Sports and Gifts in Foster were also helpful, but had a limited range and repairs were not available every day. Fish Creek is well worth visiting, with it's arty vibe, studios and cafes, however, be aware that many cafes and studios are closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, as this is their "weekend".

There should be more trails like this in all towns. Great for family walks or for getting that much needed exercise.
