10 Bars & Clubs in Ghent That You Shouldn't Miss

March 11, 2022 Leonardo Torrence

Belgium's fourth-largest - and most beautiful - city is home to a quarter of a million people and a flourishing flower export trade. An important port, Ghent's city center is a pedestrian area that is like a museum to early Flemish architecture and a testament to the city's medieval might. Impressive Gothic sites, such as dramatic St. Bavo's Cathedral and the Castle of the Counts, inspire awe. The works of Flemish masters are housed in the distinguished Museum voor Schone Kunst.

Bar Lume

Reviewed By marcobK1316XD

We happened upon the Bar Lume by chance, looking for somewhere cosy to grab a quick drink on a Sunday night when most cafes, bars and restaurants around there were closed! How lucky were we and what a warm venue in both senses of the word. We sat outside on the benches next to a group of mixed young people, who were clearly having a great time. Our waiter, who.later introduced himself as Dries, was charming, kind and helpful, happy to give us advice and share a few moments with us. That when he was definitely very busy, working solo, making/pouring drinks as well as serving them, carrying at least 15 beers one-handed on a tray! With speed too and amongst people a little the worse for wear who were moving around animatedly!! Some feat. Dries came and stayed with us for a short while, speaking in very good English, and even offered us a roll-up! How thoughtful. He invited us back the next afternoon and we would have been delighted to return to the bar, but for our hospital visit and our return Eurotunnel train! For another time, Dries. Such a great bar inside and out and such lovely staff. They reflect our whole experience in Ghent, making us wonder why us English can never (in general) be as friendly when dealing with visitors to our country! A great shame. The fact that a majority of Ghentians speak such good English also is very impressive, much as I wanted to practise my French and to learn some more Flemish.(Yes, there are English folk who desire to learn other languages!!!) .Dankje wel, Dries and we will come to the bar again when we return to Ghent! Great Belgian Trappist Beer in a 15th Century cafe. What more can you want. Fantastic Service with tables cleaned after each client. A bit surreal as everyone in Ghent are wearing masks both inside & out. Cafe Den Turk is a great place for a break during your travels.

My partner and I stopped in along our lovely visit, and read we had to try their jenever shots. It didn't disappoint. With a huge list of flavours to test and taste, the older gentleman behind the bar was lovely and accompanying to help us English natives to some fine pre-gin shots. And the bar itself was so raw and original, it really felt like maybe it's where Jenever originated. Loved it.
