This is a must-see if you're in the area. Watching a room full of people working on looms is fun and their output is artful. Also attached is a crafts gallery. We bought an interesting mug with a rounded bottom that fits into a small pedestal.

Mint Museum Randolph

Located in what was the original branch of the United States Mint, Mint Museum Randolph opened in 1936 in Charlotte’s Eastover neighborhood as the state’s first art museum. Today, in a beautiful park setting, intimate galleries invite visitors to engage with the art of the ancient Americas, ceramics and decorative arts, fashion, European and African art, among other collections. We really enjoy our visits to the Mint Museum. For a smaller city the Mint does a great job curating new and interesting exhibits. Highly recommend.

North Carolina Museum of Art

One of the leading art museums in the American South, the North Carolina Museum of Art (NCMA) recently completed a major, three-year expansion that places it in the front ranks of museums nationwide. The NCMA offers a permanent collection spanning more than 5,000 years, a variety of celebrated exhibitions and public programs, an amphitheater for outdoor performances, and the nation’s largest museum park—164 acres of trails and parkland containing major works of art.

We visited on an October "Members Only" Thursday evening. The curation has definitely improved. We were happy to see the changes in the curation of the collection in the newer main building, especially in the juxtaposition of art from different eras, styles, and countries, and the moving of a lot of more contemporary art to the main building. We were also impressed with the many focus groupings in the older exhibition building. We loved the way they are managing the pandemic with one-way arrows to guide you through the collections, face mask requirement, timed entry, and large spaces with no seating.

It was a rainy day but we had planned a day for this trips so we went. We took everyone's suggestion about going here first. Definitely the best idea. There are pottery shops in every other house it seems. But we toured the museum $2.50 each and were able to see the work we liked the best. The lady at the counter then marked them on the map and pointed out the ones close by. It made our trip SO much easier. My husband cannot walk a lot and this was a great help.

If you have any interest in art, be sure to visit the CAM. The current shows--Noguchi sculpture and furniture, and "The Eye Learns" -are terrific. The latter is the first showing of a large collection of prints that was recently donated to the museum. It includes work by Frankenthaler, Calder, Rauschenberg and many, many more. The staff was especially welcoming and helpful, and the building is bright and well-suited to show off the art.
