Somerville Auditorium

Reviewed By 619jeffry - Essendon, Australia

The Somerville Auditorium is a cinema formed by pines. It is a theatre for the Festival of Perth. Films that might not atherwise be shown in WA could be viewed here.. The Somerville Auditorium is on the campus of the University of Western Australia (UWA) at Crawley. In the old days, before widespread air conditioning, the Somerville Auditorium was a blessed relief from Perth's hot summer nights. The Festival of Perth, for better of worse, has remained a local event. It's a pity that more people can't experience this "cinema of pines."

We went to see a Perth Glory Big Bash cricket match and it was a lot of fun. The stadium facilities were really good, as were the fireworks. There was a lovely family vibe too. It did get cold after the sun had set, so taking a jacket or jumper is advisable (even in the summer time).

Fremantle Oval

Reviewed By 619jeffry - Essendon, Australia

Fremantle Oval is almost in the centre of Fremantle. It was originally known as Barracks Green Field, but has been known as Freo Oval for many years. Outside is a statue of John Gerovitch, champion full forward, taking a spectacular mark. The ground is in Parry St, it will hold 17,500 spectators, though for Australian Football League Women's (AFLW) competitions it is capped at 10,000. The club owns its own clubrooms freehold, which is unusual in WA. Fremantle Oval is the homeground of the Fremantle Dockers, who particiapate in the Australian Football League (AFL), so far without a great deal of success. Their team song is based on a traditional Russian folk song, Yo Ho Heave Ho. (Song of the Volga Boatmen).

HBF Park

As Perth’s only rectangular stadium, the venue serves as the competition base for the high performance sporting codes of Rugby League, Rugby Union and Soccer. Following a $95 million redevelopment, it is now a world class rectangular stadium capable of hosting high quality, large attendance sporting and entertainment events.

Reviewed By 619jeffry - Essendon, Australia

Certain sports are popular in Western Australia and others are not so popular. The Wildcats are popular, as are the Eagles and Dockers. HBF Park caters for 'rectangular' sports, such as soccer, rugby union and rugby league, that on occasion can draw a big crowd for a big game. It's a good venue for performers, such as English balladeer Ed Sheeran. By the way, HBF stands for Hospital Benefit Fund, a not-for-profit health fund that dominates the health insurance industry in WA.

Bendat Basketball Centre

Bendat Basketball Centre is home to the Perth Lynx basketball team and is the training facility for the Perth Wildcats. Alongside basketball, many sports such as netball, badminton and volleyball are played on the training courts.

Reviewed By 619jeffry - Essendon, Australia

The Bendat Basketball Center, also known as the WA Basketball Center, is a great facility for basketball players of all abilities. Basketball is very popular in WA and the home team, the Perth Wildcats, have done very well in the National Basketball League (NBL), winning several pennants. The Perth Lynx, the women's professional team, also use center. They have done well, but not quite as well as the men. Other sports also use this multi-purpose center. The people of WA are fortunate to have this marvelous stadium' it's a great community asset.
